Shaggy 2 Dope grew up in a family of six in Michigan. Shaggy was raised alongside two brothers and a sister.

Third child to his father David Utsler and mother Donna Utsler, he has a mixed heritage as he is half native American and half Polish, thanks to his parents.

Joseph was very close with his late brother John, the eldest of the four. He started his musical career and his wrestling career alongside his brother.
