Keana Mokbels death: Chilling footage of Tony Mokbels niece in swerving car emerges

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Chilling footage capturing the niece of Australian commercial drug mule Tony Mokbel in an out-of-control car has surfaced as family and friends mourn the death of the car crash victim.

Keana Mokbel, daughter of Horty Mokbel, tragically lost her life on Sunday night when the car she was driving struck a tree on Southern Road in Heidelberg West, 10km northeast of Melbourne.

Loved ones of the 25-year-old grieved their loss at a memorial service at a Thornbury church on Tuesday, with a funeral date yet to be determined.

It’s understood her uncle Tony, who is currently behind bars serving time at Barwon Prison for drug trafficking, has been informed of the death and has been in touch with his family.

But among online tributes for the Degani Cafe employee, a three second clip of Ms Mokbel has emerged showing her in a vehicle that appears to have swerve, which was posted in the weeks leading up to her tragic death.

The young woman acted as if she was scared before smiling as the car regained control.

“Whole life flashed before my very eyes,” the post, which was published to Facebook in late February, was captioned.

The footage featured alongside several other car selfies and videos of Ms Mokbel shared to her Facebook stories, with one accompanied by the lyrics to the song The Color Violet by Tory Lanez.

“I gave my heart, speeding car going 90 in the rain,” the lyrics read.

Ms Mokbel is being remembered by her friends as a “natural ray of sunshine” with a kind heart.

“I keep pinching myself. I cannot believe you are gone. I feel like there is a piece of me missing,” one friend, Rini Menidis, posted in a Facebook tribute.

“I miss your laugh, your 30 minute daily videos, your smile, your advice and you. You were such a light and made an imprint in everyone’s life.”

Another friend Savva Papas said Ms Mokbel was one of the “most beautiful people” he knew.

“You were always the life of the party, never failed to put a smile on people’s faces, you were loved by so many and still are & always will be,” he said.

A third loved one, Odeta Lame commented: “You have impacted my life in a way that losing you is like losing a part of me.

“I’m gonna miss your silly laugh, your one hour story times, your 100 snapchats that you’d send me every day, your presence, your love and most of all you.”

Ms Mokbel leaves behind her father and mother Rula, and her siblings Anthony and Tatiana.

Meanwhile, Tony Mokbel is not expected to apply to attend her funeral, despite a spokesman telling the Herald Sun the news of his niece’s death would leave him “lost for words”.

Mokbel was convicted in July 2012 after pleading guilty to three counts of drug trafficking.

He was sentenced to a maximum prison term of 30 years with a minimum term of 22 years, however he has since appealed his conviction after it was discovered his lawyer Nicola Gobbo, also known as Lawyer X, was a police informer.

While that conviction has since been quashed, he is still serving time for other drug-related offences.

Mokbel also made the news earlier this year after he was rushed to hospital with a suspected blood clot.

The scare was one of several health issues suffered by Mokbel while in prison, in addition to a critical injury he sustained in 2019 after being stabbed by two inmates.

Mokbel could be released in less than nine years after the Court of Appeal varied his sentence to a total of 26 years, with a non-parole period of 20 years, last month.
